It's Your Business: Church to open cafe in Rantoul

It's Your Business: Church to open cafe in Rantoul

Within a few months, downtown Rantoul should have a new coffee shop and cafe.

Java Connection, a project of First United Methodist Church in Rantoul, is slated to open in the former Mediacom building at 107 E. Sangamon Ave.

“It will be a Christian coffee shop, but not Christian in your face,” said Mark Keyes, the church’s facility and operations manager. “We’re interested in building relationships in the community by reaching out to neighbors in order to foster a family-friendly atmosphere.”

The shop will roast its own coffee beans and serve soups, salads, sandwiches and paninis, Keyes said.

“We’re doing a lot of work to make it a very modern, hip place,” he said. “We hope to attract the younger community, a younger crowd.”

Java Connection plans to offer live music on the weekends, with local artists performing on a small stage, he added.

Keyes said that when the Rev. Carol Lakota Eastin was appointed the church’s pastor, members talked about how it would be nice to have a space apart from the church campus where people intimidated by large churches could feel free to come.

Shortly after that discussion, the family of church members D. and Myra Webb offered the building on Sangamon Avenue to the church.

Church members helped gut the interior, and now work has begun on the coffee shop.

As for when Java Connection will open, Keyes said, “We’re hoping for late spring or early summer.”

Java Connection will be about two blocks west and one block north of the church, located at 200 S. Century Blvd.

They screamed for ice cream

… and Mary Sutherlin listened.

Sutherlin, who operated the Hometown Travel agency in Gifford, served on the Gifford Chamber of Commerce board of directors. She repeatedly heard people wish for an ice cream parlor in town.

Now she and her husband, Len, are about to make those dreams come true.

They’re planning to open Lenny’s Ice Cream Gallery at 308 S. Main St. — the same space where Sutherlin operated Hometown Travel. They hope to be open by the last week of March.

“I retired after 30 years in the travel business, and I did not want to have another empty building in Gifford,” Mary Sutherlin said. “I decided to put another business there, and we thought this would be a fun business.

Lenny’s Ice Cream Gallery will have 12 kinds of hand-dipped, hard ice cream and two flavors of soft-serve. The Sutherlins are still doing taste-testing to determine what brands they’ll serve.

“We’ll have sundaes, floats, malts, shakes, banana splits,” Mary Sutherlin said. “Plus, we’ll have a couple of healthy choices, with fruit smoothies.”

For Len — a retired Air Force senior master sergeant — it’ll be like old times. Working at an ice cream parlor was his first job in high school. “We were joking about it,” Mary Sutherlin said. “I told him, ‘This will be your first job and your last job.’”

Hours for Lenny’s Ice Cream Gallery are expected to be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

The ice cream parlor has seating for about 50, and customers can use a garden seating area once the weather warms up.

The phone number for the parlor is 568-7400, and the website is

lennysicecreamgallery.com.

For “city folk” unfamiliar with Gifford — population 975 — here are some simple directions for getting there.

— From Champaign-Urbana, take Interstate 57 north to Rantoul, then take U.S. 136 about 8 miles east to Gifford.

— For Danville residents, head north on Illinois 1 for about 10 miles, then follow U.S. 136 as it turns west, and continue 18 miles to Gifford.

Can you guess the five animals?

Josh Kern of Monticello has opened a new kung fu school in Champaign, and it’s called Five Animals Choy Lei Fut.

The school, which opened in January, is located at 219 S. Locust St., C, where it shares space with the Precious Sword Shaolin Martial Arts Academy.

“Choy Lei Fut is a southern-style kung fu,” Kern said, referring to southern China. “What makes it different from other southern styles is that it incorporates parts of northern-style kung fu.”

Kern said martial arts icon Bruce Lee once described Choy Lei Fut as the hardest style to defend against, but the best for defending against multiple attackers.

“It uses big sweeping motions and 10- to 15-hit combos, which makes it hard for a group of people to get close,” Kern said.

So where did Kern come up with the name Five Animals?

“A lot of Chinese kung fu styles derive from various animal movements,” he said. “We use tiger, leopard, crane, snake and dragon.”

Kern said he has been involved with that style of kung fu for three years and also has eight years of experience with Okinawan karate. He and fellow instructor Dan Putman were previously part of a Choy Lei Fut school in Urbana operated by Dan’s brother, Rob.

Kern said some people learn kung fu for the exercise.

“It provides a good core and shoulder workout, leg strength, a sense of balance and aerial techniques,” he said.

Five Animals offers classes from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and has an open gym for students from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays. The school’s phone number is 480-5722, and the website is fiveanimalsclf.com.

I'll break christian down for you in my ramblings in relation to church of christ bible study. If youe willing to drop the thinking that youe got to be perfect and so does your marriage, you can soon be on your way to health and happiness in what may be the second most important relationship of your life besides God. Today, Christian Louboutin may be known as as a best gear brand by every fashionista. To contemplate your love for me And the sacrifices You've made Fills me with assurance That I should never be afraid. For this cause, it only makes sense that this could be a figuring out aspect in generating matches among single Christians. There are so many potential distractions and too little emphasis on the benefits that the young ones can reap from the four corners of a classroom. As you wait on Him incorporate medically proven relaxation techniques into your lifestyle to reduce your chances of developing stress related illnesses. The general atmosphere of a Christian rehab is love, comfort, warmth, support and encouragement. The Internet has provided new chances for everyone. During a Christian marriage retreat we were attending, there had been a testimony session where a few couples happen to be chosen to discuss exactly how Jesus has blessed their marriages. In fact, enjoy good food on all three days of this Revival festivity. Unhealthy thoughts inevitably lead to unhealthy actions with devastating consequences. Children barred from Florida church where sex offender preaches

1329901353 12 Children barred from Florida church where sex offender preaches

A Florida church has caused outrage by turning away children from its popular Sunday services to cater to a pastor who is a registered sex offender.

The decision to allow convicted child molester Darrell Gilyard into the pulpit has angered neighbouring pastors and members of the congregation of the Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist church in Jacksonville.

Gilyard, 49, is allowed no contact with minors under the terms of his release from a three-year jail sentence for abusing a 15-year-old girl at another church in 2009. As a result church leaders have made his services “adults only”.

Parishioners claim security guards hired by the church have begun refusing admission to families with children, including a woman who tried to attend on Sunday with a two-year-old boy.

Instead, they say, children are directed to remain “off site” while Gilyard is preaching, and they accuse the church of dismantling its playground to keep them away.

Since Gilyard was hired last month, soon after his December release from jail, the church in Northside, one of Jacksonville’s poorest, mostly black neighbourhoods, has become the scene of angry exchanges between protesters and his supporters.

A group of demonstrators calling itself the New Black Panther party clashed with churchgoers and promised to protest each time Gilyard led a service.

“We came because the children who we should be teaching and preaching cannot come out today,” said Mikhail Muhammad, the group’s leader.

“The black ministers in the city of Jacksonville ought to be ashamed of themselves. How can you say you’re a follower of Christ but you won’t stand up and speak out against this injustice?”

Despite the protests, the church appears to have benefited from Gilyard’s notoriety. His first service in January drew an estimated 150 people, up from a regular attendance of only five to 10, with dozens attending the most recent service on Sunday.

Deacon Paul S Newman, chairman of the church ministry, said: “He was down on the ground, and the church was down on the ground, and we both needed to get up.”

But fellow Baptist leaders have denounced Gilyard’s appointment, saying he needs to apologise to his victims and the community before being allowed to preach to others.

“We love Mr Gilyard as a human being and have no personal animosity, but he is a very wicked sinner who has committed hideous crimes against women and children,” said Pastor George Harvey of the nearby Mount Charity Baptist Church.

“Any minister who has done such evil should not be restored to the pulpit until his repentance is as notorious as his sin.”

Before his conviction on two counts of molesting minors, Gilyard was a shining star in the Baptist community, having spent 14 years preaching to thousands at Jacksonville’s Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.

One mentor hailed him as one of the “most brilliant men in the pulpit” and he was also once praised by the noted evangelical Jerry Falwell, founder of the Moral Majority movement, in his video The Darrell Gilyard Story, which chronicled his rise from a teenage orphan living on the streets.

But Gilyard, once a protege of Pastor Jerry Vines, a past president of the Southern Baptist Convention, was no stranger to controversy. He was formerly pastor of a church in Texas, but left in 1991 following allegations of sexual misconduct.

When charged with sex crimes in Florida in 2008, Rev Vines issued a statement saying that he had previously forgiven Gilyard for his problems in Texas but could no longer stand by him.

“I extended forgiveness and mercy to him and evidently he trampled upon them,” Rev Vines wrote at the time.

“No minister, if guilty of sexual improprieties, especially with underage children, should ever be allowed to stand behind the sacred desk again. Let the truth be found and let justice be done.”

In 2004, Gilyard admitted that he had fathered a child with a woman who had accused him of raping her during a counselling session, according to court records. Gilyard has not been charged with rape.

Gilyard’s public comments have been few and he has refused to speak directly with journalists, slamming a door on a television crew that confronted him at the hotel where he resides near Jacksonville International Airport.

But in a statement sent by text message to the Florida Times Union newspaper this month he remained defiant.

“Somehow I will prove that life isn’t over when one has committed a crime for which he receives this heinous label,” he wrote. “You don’t have to languish on the fringes of society.”

In earlier comments he described his church comeback as “refreshing and invigorating” but revealed that he had initially declined the offer of work because he knew that it might create controversy.

“I was scared to death,” he admitted, adding that his probation officer had cleared him to work there and that he was a man reformed. “I’m happy to have that dark part of my life over,” he told the paper last month.

Nobody from the church was available for comment Tuesday and a call to Gilyard’s lawyer was not immediately returned.

Roger Oldham, spokesman for the executive committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, which has more than 16 million members in the US, said it was not empowered to step into the dispute.

“We have taken a strong position on the protection of children and believe it to be of paramount importance in a local church setting but have no authority over the actions of any individual church,” he said.

Robin Thicke Arrested for Marijuana; Police Wanted Autographs

  • REUTERS/Gus RuelasActor Robin Thicke arrives at Pharrell William’s launch for his new liqueur in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles, California

February 21, 2012|9:40 am

The 34-year-old R&B singer was arrested near Madison Square Park, but happily obliged when he was later asked for autographs by law enforcement, according to The New York Daily News.

“He was taking pictures with the cops. They were coming over to him and getting autographs,” a source told The Daily News.

“He wasn’t driving. He was sitting in the car. He was arrested and a small amount of marijuana was recovered on him,” a police source said.

Thicke, the husband of renowned actress Paula Patton, was immediately taken into police custody where he was given a desk assignment ticket.

The ticket means that although the singer-songwriter was released, he will be charged at a future arraignment.

Thicke had just performed at the Nomad’s Way gala, which is an elite event designed to benefit educational initiatives in Kazakhstan, the night before his arrest.

The award winning artist, who has a 22-month-old son, Julian Fuego, with Patton, released his fifth studio album Love After War in December.

Thicke, who is also the son of “Growing Pains” actor Alan Thicke, made his first debut as a singer in 2002 with his debut song “When I Get You Alone.”

Along with singing, Thicke is also a successful songwriter who has worked with many Hollywood artists including Lil Wayne and Jennifer Hudson.

In 2004 and 2009, Thicke won three Grammy awards for his songwriting and production work on Jennifer Hudson’s self-titled album Jennifer Hudson, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III, and Usher’s Confessions.

While some critics have condemned the actions of the arresting police officers- as it was found that some requested autographs- sources say that Thicke was not bothered by their actions, so an investigation is not likely.

Thicke has not yet publicly spoken about his recent arrest.

MATT WORDSWORTH: And so you don’t resile from that comment? You see, there is a danger in preparing for remarriage with the wrong motivations. When a couple goes by way of pre-marriage counseling, they are forced to deal with some concerns that they may well have been steering clear of since they are "placing their greatest foot forward," and because they possibly want to keep away from some items that may start off an argument. Free Daily Love Stories For Married Couples – It is not what it looks like

Tony stood there shocked. He was holding flowers that he bought for his wife in his hands as he looked at her standing there in the bathroom with nothing but a towel on and a cable guy with his shirt off and his trousers down below his waist. When everyone regained their breath. Tony’s wife, Emma said; “Honey, it is not what it looks like.” Tony threw the flowers down on the bathroom floor. He turned and started to walk away as fast as he could. Not replying to what his wife had said. Emma touched Tony’s shoulder and started to explain but he shrugged his shoulder, sending her palm flying off him. Emma grabbed her robe from the hanger by the bathroom door and tried to dress decently as she also tried to explain things to her husband. The next time she tried to touch him, he was so fumed that he pushed her to the floor. She still tried to talk to him but he was too angry. Too fumed up. His head was on fire. The cable guy tried to explain things too but Tony was out the door and in his car in a twinkling of an eye. Tony drove as fast as he could. How could she do this to him? How could she betray him like that? For how long has it been going on? As Tony drove, only angry thoughts blazed through his mind. What hurt him most was that he still loved her – He still loved her but she clearly never loved him in the first place. The one he lived for didn’t love him back. There was no reason for him to live anymore. Tony stopped by a bridge and climbed up on the edge. He was going to jump. As he was about to jump he heard the voice of God say, “Do you now know how bad I feel each time you betray me by going back to the sin I saved you from?” Tony remembered all the sins he had committed against God that week. He understood what God meant. It was as though he was looking eyeball to eyeball at God’s love. There was no turning away from what he saw. Then Tony heard God speaking to him again. God said, “In any case, what you saw at home is really not what it looks like, go ask your wife for her explanation. You love her so much that you can’t live without her. She can’t live without you too. Have faith in her. Have faith in your love even beyond what you can see with your optical eyes. She has sacrificed a lot for you through the years and you know it.” Tony got down the edge of the bridge. He got down the edge of the side of the bridge. He wiped the tears from his eyes. Images of all the beautiful memories he’s had with his wife and all the sacrifices she’s made for him through the years flashed through him mind. It seemed they had no end. He and his wife had truly been through a lot. How could he stop believing in her? How could he doubt for a second in their love? He never knew a woman that had ever loved a man the way his wife loved him. Tony pulled out his cell phone from his pocket and he called his wife. She had been driving around the city in her car looking for him. She asked him where he was over the phone and he told her. She told him to stay there that she is coming. A few minutes later her car pulled up beside him and she ran out of the car to meet him. She got on her knees and begged him to give her time to explain. She told him that what happened was that she had called the cable guy to come over to fixed the cable, and while working he was also drinking a canned beverage that he came with. He later asked if he could use the men’s room and she showed him the way to their joined toilet and bath which as Tony knows was the only one they had. Tony’s wife told him that after he finished he got right back to work. He was taking too much time, and because the air conditioner had broken and he was doing heavy work he was sweating heavily so he took off his shirt. Tony’s wife decided that she should go on with the rest of her day as usually rather than waiting for him to finish working, so she went into the bathroom to take a shower and right after her shower, as she pulled back the shower curtain and started coming out of the shower she saw the cable guy about to take a piss in the toilet. He didn’t know she was there. He probably figured that since he felt like he had to go he might as well go where the lady of the house showed him before and just take a leak. And it was at that moment Tony had walked in with the flowers. Tony got on his knees beside his wife after he had listened to his wife’s explanation. He saw nothing but love when he looked into her eyes. He just knew she wasn’t lying. He burst out in tears. She burst out in tears too. They hugged each other as they both were kneeing on the bridge. They started laughing. They were laughing and crying at the same time but the laughing was swallowing up the crying. Soon they were laughing uncontrollably but it was all love. Snow started falling and they looked up to the sky. Tony kissed his wife, taking her by surprise. He broke the kiss, looked up to the skies and said; “THANK YOU LORD JESUS. YOU ARE AWESOME.”

Gospel Singer Speaks About Dealing With Suicidal Thoughts

February 18, 2012|5:13 pm

“God changed me and that’s why that song means something to me,” is an understatement of Helms’ transforming and life challenging experience.

“Changed” which will be featured on Helms’ upcoming Music World release Moving Forward resonates from a place of thankful for the singer who wrestled with a difficult season of postpartum depression.

“[W]hen I had my son, I dealt with severe postpartum depression that literally caused me to have suicidal tendencies,” the singer said in a statement for Amazon.

Postpartum depression is considered a serious illness that occurs in the few months after childbirth in which one experiences sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness.

A study by the CDC that included more than 52,000 women in 17 states found that postpartum depression ranged from 11.7 percent in Maine to 20.4 percent in New Mexico. The CDC urges any woman dealing with the illness to seek immediate help for the sake of the mother and that of the child.

Helms, who came from a loving family, credits her mother for helping her recover.

“My mom is a fireball and a prayer warrior and she prayed me through it.”

The singer, who surprised many Sunday Best fans with her strong vocals, lost valuable time with her son because of the illness and while dealing with it, still served in ministry.

“I was still leading worship through it all, but it was really a rough, rough, time. I don’t remember a lot of my son’s first year being here with me because I was not in the right frame of mind.”

How do family members nab superb christian solutions? This is a bag of tricks to lessening the impact of that. Community of christ moves at a blistering speed. Confess to the Lord the things you discover about yourself and make a plan for change. It is only when he/she is able to reconnect the guilt feelings to the thoughts or actions that give rise to them is he/she apt to develop the remorse and repentance that open the way to genuine moral and spiritual insight and growth.
